How Quests Build Skills

FAQ Updated Jan 15, 2026

Your daily quest completions feed into the skill system. Here’s how it works.

The Connection

When you complete a quest, several things happen:

  1. Entry recorded - The date, value, and success status are saved
  2. Metrics update - Total completions, current streak, sums, etc.
  3. Skill progress calculated - Requirements are checked against your metrics

Metrics Explained

Skills can require different metrics:

  • success_total - Total number of times you’ve completed a quest
  • success_streak - Your current unbroken streak (resets on miss)
  • number_sum - Total accumulated value (for number quests)
  • number_max - Highest single value achieved
  • text_days - Number of days with text entries
  • rules_created - Meta metric: how many quests you’ve created

Example Skill Path

Let’s say you have a “Morning Routine Master” skill that requires:

  • Complete “Wake before 7am” 30 times (success_total >= 30)
  • Complete “Make bed” 30 times (success_total >= 30)
  • Maintain a 7-day streak on either quest (success_streak >= 7)

Each day you complete these quests, you’re making progress. The skill page shows your percentage complete. When all requirements hit 100%, the skill unlocks.

Compound Growth

This is the magic: small daily actions → measurable progress → unlocked achievements → motivation to continue → more daily actions.

The system creates a virtuous cycle. Your quests aren’t isolated checkboxes - they’re building toward something.
